I visited Cripple Creek a couple years ago. As I was walking down the street, in the middle of town, a donkey trotted by in front of me. What the heck just happened?, I thought to myself. Into, the donkey derby days.
As I later learned, donkeys, supposedly decedents of the donkeys used back in the mining heyday, freely roam around Cripple Creek.

And for the past 88 years, those donkeys are celebrated during Donkey Derby Days.

Where

Cripple Creek Colorado, about an hour drive from Colorado Springs

When
The third full weekend in June. You missed it in 2019, but mark your calendar for June 20-21, 2020.
What

A celebration of Cripple Creek’s donkeys, including a parade,

a band, (including someone playing a washboard; how often do you see that?)

vendors, and, of course, the Donkey Derby.

Conclusion – Donkey Derby Days
Cripple Creek is a great little town with an old mining town feel.
Where else are you going to see a Donkey Derby? If you are in Colorado Springs the third weekend in June, check it out.
