Best Things to do in Bergen Norway

Bergen, Norway’s second largest city, feels like a small town, but there is plenty to do.  Here are 9 great things to do in Bergen.

1. Bryggen

The old fishing wharf, first established in the 12th century. After the great fire of 1702, the area was rebuilt in the traditional style. Stroll the wooden streets past the buildings from the early 1700s.

If you are in Bergen this is the one unique place you must go.

2. Fløibanen

Take the funicular to Mount Fløyen for a spectacular view of the city.

3. Hike to Mount Fløyen

If you would rather walk, follow the path above the funicular entrance via Fjellveien. The walk should take less than an hour. You get the same view by taking the funicular but this feels much more rewarding.

As long as you are up there, there are plenty of hiking trails, and you can spend hours more walking around.

4. Bergenhus Fortress Complex

This royal residence and banqueting hall was built by King Håkon Håkonsson sometime between 1247 and 1261.

When we were there mid June BergenFest was held on the Bergenhus Fortress grounds.

5. Take a walk through the Nordnes District

Stroll cobble streets past old wooden houses in the the quiet residential area of Nordnes.

6. Bergen Aquarium

As long as you are out in the Nordnes district, go all the way to the end and visit the Bergen Aquarium. Admission: 275 NOK

7. Take a fjord tour

They aren’t cheap but isn’t seeing fjords one of the reasons you go to Norway?

Expect to pay 500 to 1000 NOK ($60 to $120).

8. Be on the lookout for trolls

Norwegians love their trolls.

9. Eat

Bergen Fish Market

Right along the water. It’s expensive but getting a meal there is kind of a thing to do. Expect to pay 200 NOK ($25) and up for something as simple as fish and chips.

Frescohallen

Dine at Matborsen in the Fresco Hall surrounded by murals that are considered Norwegian national treasures. Pricey, but so is everything in Norway.

Trekroneren

A popular old sausage stand near the harbor.

Go for the reindeer sausage with lingonberry sauce and crispy onions. There is no seating, so go find a place to sit along the harbor and enjoy. Plus it’s possibly the cheapest food you will find near the harbor. Cost 65 NOK (about $8)
